Land Rover Discovery Overview & Gearbox
Land Rover Discovery Overview
Land Rover is one of the oldest four-wheel drive vehicle manufacturers in the world, developing one of the most capable SUVs that money can buy. The British automaker first launched the Discovery in 1989, which shared underpinnings with the flagship Range Rover. Today the Land Rover Discovery is in its fourth generation and is called the Discovery 4 (LR4 in the US). The Land Rover Discovery has got several awards including the best large SUV in the world. This 7-seater SUV is quite capable and benefits from Land Rover design and technology. It is available in India with a TDV6 diesel engine, making it an formidable alternative in the full sized SUV space. View Offers & Price on Discovery in Mumbai at CarzPrice
Land Rover Discovery Exterior & Style
The Discovery 5 takes its design cues from the 2014 Discovery Vision Concept. The new Disco moves away from its characteristic rectangular motif and adopts a more stylish and curvy design language set up by the new Evoque. Land Rover’s honeycomb grille is now flanked by sleek and modern LED headlamps. The imposing front bumper retains the skid plates and the necessary air vents.
The flared wheel arches define the characteristic silhouette of the Disco. The decked up roof is now a little less stepped-up compared to the older car. The tailgate is no longer horizontally split and has been replaced with a conventional top hinged tailgate with a slightly raked rear windscreen. The tail lights too are more modern sleek LEDs.
The Discovery features Jaguar Land Rover’s new aluminium infused chassis thus losing at least a couple of quintals in weight. The new chassis-body design opens up more space for the seven occupants in the three-rows the Discovery is known for.
The new Discovery measures 4,970mm in lenght, 2,220mm in width and stand 1,846mm tall, making it 141mm longer but both narrower and lower than before. Its 2,923mm wheelbase has increased by 38mm, thus creating generous cabin space.
Land Rover Discovery Interior & comfort
The interior styling of the Discovery Sport matches that of the other new Land Rovers. The new Discovery Sport is the perfect replacement for those who need fresh and modern styling and were hesitating too buy the Freelander2. The Discovery Sport retains high quality interiors but do not expect it to be premium. The Discovery family is about good quality but not premium and there is a difference between the two.
There is the two-dial instrument cluster with white backlight, easy to read and operate. For those not used to Land Rovers the power windows switches are mounted next to the window than the armrest. Another JLR touch is the rising gear knob when you push the ignition switch. The Discovery Sport even has a new centre console, which is simple to operate and functional. The Discovery series is more about being functional than luxurious
What it misses is the character of the Freelander2, like bigger windows that made the cabin feel airy, the thick and chunky gear stick, the twin vertical chrome strips on the steering wheel that functioned as the horn. These aren’t important but they add some more character the SUV. This is what Freelander did and but the new Discovery series has its own design characteristic
The things that we liked about the Discovery Sport is the rear seat space and no more stadium like seating that the Freelander2 offered. Then there is also an option of 5+2 seating as well so two children can be seated at the rear making it a complete family SUV. It is available as a fine and seven-seater.
Land Rover Discovery Engine & Gearbox
The Discovery Sport gets the same 2.0-litre turbo petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines as the Freelander2. The Discovery Sport is lighter than the Freelander2 and hence it has much better performance also. The Freelander2 was based on a Ford-designed EUCD platform, which it even shares it with other Volvos as well. The new-generation Land Rovers are utilising in-house technology and this is helping them to become independent and at the same time even moving away it’s synergies from its previous owner Ford Motor Company.
The Discovery Sport’s diesel engine is offered in states of tune, one is 148bhp and the second is 188bhp. These are mated to a nine-speed transmission. We have driven the five-seater 188bhp version. The engine noise is fairly low and the NVH levels are at par with competition. The power that this engine produces is good enough and what we appreciate is the instant response from the engine. There is sufficient power on tap to overtake but no V6 Diesel option on offer that some of the competition offers as well. So if we compare apples to apples the Discovery Sport is at par with competition.
Driving in city or the highway you won’t run out of steam. There is sufficient grunt in the engine and makes it easy to drive. Ideally drive it in D mode, the S mode is when you want to sprint ahead but the difference isn’t anything major. In D the engine is comfortable as it is mostly in its power band and this is sufficient to drive
Land Rover Discovery Driving Dynamics
The standard air suspension delivers a suitably smooth ride. The Discovery is particularly comfortable at motorway speeds when it wafts over undulations like a jumbo jet running into very mild turbulence, but even broken town surfaces don’t cause any discomfort.
True, the Discovery isn’t quite as serenely comfortable as an Audi Q7 on air suspension, but then again, air is an expensive option on the Audi. As is often the case, avoid really big alloys (21in and larger) if you want your Discovery to ride as smoothly as possible. For information on contact details of Land Rover car dealers in Kolkata
The Discovery is very much geared towards comfort rather than sporty handling. You can steer the car through corners with confidence at reasonable speeds without feeling as though you’re about to tip over, although it never feels as eager to change direction as a Volvo XC90 and leans more when it does.
The steering is slow, so getting around tight corners requires plenty of arm work. The Discovery isn’t the ideal town car, then, but it is among the best off-roaders in the world. It’ll breeze over terrain that its rivals couldn’t even dream of trying to tackle, thanks to a class-leading ground clearance of 283mm, a wading depth of 900mm (also best in class) and a multitude of clever electronics.
Land Rover Discovery Safety & security
All trim levels come with eight airbags and automatic emergency braking, which (as it says on the tin) means the car can automatically hit the brakes if it senses you’re about to hit the person in front – even if they’re on foot.
Upgrade to HSE trim and you’ll also get a driver condition monitor, traffic sign recognition (the speed limit of the road you’re driving down is displayed on the dashboard), a blind spot monitoring system and rear cross traffic alert. The latter warns you of approaching vehicles when you’re backing out onto a road.
All three rows of seats have Isofix mounting points, a point noted by Euro NCAP when it awarded the Discovery the maximum five stars in its crash test. If you look at the individual categories, the Discovery isn’t as good as the XC90 or the Q7 for adult or child protection, but outscores them both when it comes to protecting pedestrians.

Land Rover Discovery Bottomline
The Discovery is a good SUV with many strengths, but that doesn’t mean it stands above its competitors. There are other luxury midsize SUVs that are plenty athletic. The Land Rover Range Rover Sport has powerful engine options and is one of the few SUVs in the class that can match the Discovery’s off-road abilities. If you like the Discovery’s luxurious interior, you might be interested in the Volvo XC90, which delivers excellent cargo space, plenty of technology, and possibly the most comfortable seats in the class.
