Merecedes Benz AMG S63 Coupe Overview
In standard configuration, the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe S packs a mean punch. It’s powered by a 5.5-liter bi-turbo V-8 engine that spits out 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds to go with an electronically limited top speed of 186 mph. By most metrics, those numbers add up to a car that’s as potent as they come. Then again, that sentiment doesn’t mean much when you’re talking about a tuner like Fostla whose business has always been about giving cars like the AMG S63 Coupe S more power at their disposal. And so, the German tuner is here to present its latest tuning kit, a walloping program for the high-performance Merc that comes with an increased output of 740 horsepower and 885 pound-feet of torque.
The numbers are attention-grabbing, but they’re not the only things worth mentioning about this program. It also has some snazzy visual effects meant to bring out more personality out of the AMG S63 Coupe S. There are also a new set of wheels and tires that Fostla received from aftermarket peer Prior Design.All told, the engine upgrade is the unquestioned showpiece of the program. Not only does it bring the output of the AMG S63 Coupe S to supercar levels, but those numbers are enough to actually up-end competing tuners and their own takes on the Mercedes.It’s true that Fostla is entering a competitive field with this program since a lot of other tuners have kits for the same high-performance Mercedes-AMG model. Rest assured, though, Fostla makes a good account of itself with an engine upgrade that should make an impression to owners of the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe S.
A brief glance is enough to establish the fact that the S63 Coupe looks quite special. The signature AMG grille lends the S63 loads of presence and the large air-intakes in the bumper hints at the large engine that is nestling under the long sculpted hood. In profile, Mercedes has kept things simple and the swooping roofline gives the car great stance. At the rear the elongated wrap-around tail lamps dominate and the minimalistic boot surface blends in well with the rest of the design. The aggressive twin tail pipes add some spice and it spouts performance on tap. Although the overall design looks sporty, Mercedes has also managed to retain some subtlety and elegance which makes the car look special.
As expected the AMG division has tried to keep this mammoth’s weight to as low as possible. This has resulted in a car which is 65 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. This weight saving was achieved largely thanks to the use of a lightweight lithium-ion battery and AMG forged light-alloy wheels. Furthermore, the entire body and the front end are made of aluminium. Despite these weight saving measures the S63 AMG still weighs a hefty 2070kg. That’s a lot for a car with sporting pretensions. But one must remember that even though it is a two-door Coupe, it is just 200mm shorter than the S350 L. Even the wheelbase is just 90mm shorter than the full fledged sedan.
As you would expect with any S, the AMG version gets loads of gizmos onboard and it is more apparent when it comes to its suspension. The S63 AMG gets the famed magic body control and the curve tilting function. Magic body control basically works with the help of the front mounted camera, which scans the road ahead to prepare the suspension according to the road conditions. The curve tilting function allows this Coupe to lean into corners like a motorcycle which in turn, minimises body-roll and helps mask the heavyweight’s mass.
The interiors of the S-Coupe need to luxurious, elegant and at the same time sporty (because of the AMG character). It is a difficult task. But the designers at Affalterbach and Stuttgart did a lot of thinking and crafted the perfect interiors. The instrument panel is derived from the S-Class and it still has some touches from AMG and the S Coupe. This is likely to be one of the few AMGs to have a gearstick on the steering column than the sporty AMG gearshifter at the centre. The steering wheel is chunky and good to grip with flappy paddles that make it a joy to shift. The large LED display for the instrument cluster and the centre console makes the S Coupe look very tech-loaded and modern.
The front row seats are comfortable and do look sporty. They are a hybrid of luxury and sportiness, so it has lumber support, while the side support is dynamic and in sync with the steering input for best support. We had experience something similar with the E63 AMG, this has been further personified for better support. The space in the second row is also decent, though it might be a bit tight for long people. The rear seat is extremely comfortable and there the seat is cosy. There is space for two people only as there is a centre arm-rest as well. You will only have difficulty to sit at the back only if you are a six-footer and front seat is occupied by someone who is equally tall too. The toy quotient on the S63 AMG is high thanks to its connect with the S-Class. The seatbelt is offered to you by a robotic butler everytime you step inside. The sunroof tints automatically to avoid harsh sun rays from intruding into the cabin.
And now comes the part which you and me are more interested in, after all, this is a twin-turbo AMG with 5.5-litres of displacement (this powerplant is on its way out), thrusting out 585 HP of power and 900 Nm of torque. The aforementioned figures might make you believe that the S63 AMG would scoot ahead like a falcon and it does so by achieving the 0-100 km/hr sprint in a mere 4.2 seconds. Turn on the car and the 8-cylinders do come to life with a rumble but that’s about the only sound you would be lucky enough to hear on the inside. That’s because the S63 AMG, being from the S-Class lineage, has a terrifically well insulated cabin which is a minus point for sure because you simply can’t hear much of the V8 motor even when you are hard on the gas.
The S63 AMG Coupe channels power to the rear wheels and going hard on the accelerator pedal does spin the wheels before the electronics kick in to keep the car pointing in the right direction. Mercedes also offers an all-wheel drive version of the S63 AMG Coupe which does the sprint to the ton in 3.9 seconds but is reserved to left-hand drive markets only. There is good performance throughout as peak torque is available right from 2250 RPM, up to 3750 RPM while peak power is achieved at 5500 RPM. The mid-range is strong and the top-end also packs in punch, the car redlining at under 6500 RPM. 100 km/hr comes up in second and in top gear at the same speed, the tacho ticks in at a low 1500 RPM.
In typical AMG fashion, there are three engine modes – C for Comfort (engine sound is hardly audible in this mode), M for Manual and S for Sports, the latter most giving the S63 AMG the most punch. The car won’t upshift in M mode and let’s you take control of things, although the console will suggest you to ‘UP’ shift. The 7-speed gearbox has decently quick shifts and although not the fastest around, has been tuned well to respond to throttle inputs. Top speed is limited to 250 km/hr and can be increased to 300 km/hr with the optional AMG Driver’s package. During our test, the best mileage we saw was 3.85 km/l, which coupled with the 80-litre fuel tank, doesn’t give this Mercedes car a big range.
DRIVING DYNAMICS ;
All its wheels have been fitted with a set of high performance disc brakes, which are further accompanied with calipers. It features an electronic stability program that regulates the individual wheel braking and improves its stability. On the other hand, this vehicle is blessed with an airmatic suspension package with continuously variable damping control system. The cabin is incorporated with an advanced electric power steering system, which offers a precise response depending upon the speed levels. This adjustable steering wheel supports a minimum turning radius of 12.3 meters.
The Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe is a very safe car and comes with a slew of active and passive safety systems. There are 9 airbags on offer along with a slew of systems including ESP, Brake Assist, Cross-Traffic Assist, Attention Assist, Adaptive Brake, Collision Prevention Assist, Pre-Safe, City Brake, Traffic Sign Assist, Speed Limit Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Bonnet, Night View Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Parking Assist, Torque Vectoring Brake, Crosswind Assist, Magic Vision Control and a lot more. Mercedes has the largest sales and service network in India which is by far larger than its rivals.
With so many options to choose from, picking which aftermarket program for the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe is tricky and difficult. Ultimately, though, the best advice we can make is to know what your priorities are when you’re in the market for a tuning kit. If you want overblown programs that dramatically changes every section of the car, Fostla’s offering may not be suitable for you. But if you want a relatively simple upgrade without the smallest of bells and whistles but with matching performance improvements, the German tuner has one that’s worth looking into.
